Sometimes it's good to see how the sausage is made :-). I agree that the 
assistant would be able to do the same thing more or less on this simple 
stitch and would be the practical method in many cases. For newbies wanting 
to stop being newbies, seeing what goes under the hood can be instructive. 
I hope that the OP will be able to follow the steps and apply the method 
for the times when the assistant doesn't work so well and some manual 
intervention is required.
