Maybe you have binfmt configured to execute DOS applications with DOSEMU.
It works in such way.

Can you send here result of this command:
   file yourdosapp.exe

None of pure DOS application can work because WINE does not have
code necessary to execute them. But as I said it's possible that
you have DOS emulation layer with your MS-Windows libraries and
it's used automatically. Do you have MS-Windows installed on your
computer (on different partitions) or only Linux is installed
without any MS code.

Windows applications can be executed without any problems using WINE
but the performance of IO operations is fatal. Even simple tests show
that database access is over 10 times slower then in native applications.
DOS applications executed by DOSEMU are only about 2-3 times slower.
