I don't understand the purpose of these. IMO three extensions
is more than enough overall, or even *two*, since I'd favour -target
notation instead of special .hbt extension. I may even replace it
with -target=<file.hbm> format for clarity.

This way:
current .hbp would become .hbl
current .hbm would become .hbp

Simple.
