IMO, all environment vars and compiler switches should default for
maximum performance - If a user wants profiling, tracing, debugging,
etc., they can enable them as required.
In general I don't agree that we should aim
for maximum performance.
Sorry, I forgot about the binary builds where the user would have no
control/option to change the defaults. I agree, in this case, a
balance of performance-to-usefulness needs to be achieved.
I guess, in the case of the user building their own binaries, they
can do whatever they want. However, in this case, it would be great
to have a document listing all the options including a brief
description and the implications of enabling/disabling them.
