A digital signature means surprisingly little. These are the conditions that must be met for a signature to be meaningful: it must be correct, issued from a validated[*] certificate, and belong to a trusted person. If you've got all those, then yes, a digital signature can be very meaningful. If you don't, they mean very little. Maybe I should add this to the FAQ, along with an explanation of why.
