Nice.

I'm certainly no expert on flatpak sandbox rules, but I thought everything in ~/ was fair game.

So ~/.local/share/gnucash is still within that realm, and thus works.

The glue is the symbolic link. The flatpak is looking in a different place (~/.var/...) and you are just redirecting it, (to ~/.local/...) but since it is withing your user's home tree, it can still get to it. Otherwise, you'd have to issue a file-forwarding directive if I recall correctly, but again, I'm not too well versed on that at the moment.

And all of that might offer me a clue about how to get a particular flatpak .desktop file to properly use the GnuCash icon. Oddly, it did the first time it was installed, and then disappeared upon subsequent logins. I suspect this is because it doesn't have access to the icon location. So I either need to copy it elsewhere, or, as you have done, just link it. The kicker for me is where does the flatpak *want* to find the icon?

Adrien

Back in (looks at notes) 2020, when I still wasn't sure I wanted to switch
to flatpak, I was worried about losing all my saved reports etc. every time
I switched.

SO I created a symbolic link TO ~/.local/share/gnucash/ FROM
~/.var/app/org.gnucash.Gnucash/data/

I believe the command I used was

$ ln -s ~/.local/share/gnucash/ ~/.var/app/org.gnucash.Gnucash/data/

I didn't expect it to work (because of flatpak sandboxing rules) but it
worked fine. That way I could switch back and forth if needed.

In practice, however, I have not needed to switch back to a .deb
installation of GnuCash. Not that flatpaks are perfect -- there are quirks
to handle -- but overall it's an easy way to install and upgrade GnuCash.

BEFORE YOU DO THIS be sure to verify the locations are correct for your
system. You'll also need to move the "target" directory (if it exists)
before you can put a symlink there.
