Bob,

It sounds as though you have several programs running in Linux Mint in
addition to GnuCash itself. Which version of Linux Mint are you using
and which desktop (Cinnamon, MATE etc)?

How are you starting GnuCash? Presumably from the Menu?

If it is saying when you try to start GnuCash that the file is not
available, that suggests that the file has been moved to a different
location from when you started GnuCash last. It is possible to create
several instances of GnuCash. Depending on your Linux Mint version
these will be displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the screen
with a number on the GnuCash icon indicating the number of instances of
the program running. Right click on the icon and select Close All to
get rid of any existing instances.

The best bet is to use the File explorer (Nemo)to locate any files with
the ".gnucash" extension in your home directory.

In addition to the actual data file "<filename>.gnucash" there may be
backup "<filename>.gnucash.<timestamp>.gnucash" and log files
<filename>.gnucash.<timestamp>.log and/or a file with a ".lck"
extension where <filename> is the name you originally gave your file.

It is a good practice to create a folder/directory with just the name
<filename> and place all of the above files with the same file name in
that folder/directory.  This will make operations like backups of the
file or recovery from a corrupt data file a lot easier.

Then when you open GnuCash it will come up with the same message that
it cannot find the file. Go to the menu select File->Open and then
navigate to the folder and then to the datafile (<filename>.gnucash)
and open the file. Usually GnuCash will remember the last location you
opened the file in and open it automatically, but if you move the file
elsewhere you will need to use the File_>Open dialogue to open it.

A good place to seek help on Linux Mint specific issues would be

Thanks for that,  John. Using your hint I found the guide and

It might be a useful bookmark for everyone:
