Bob Thge simplest way should be to use the version of GnuCash installed in the Linux Mint 21.3 repository. You should be able to install that directly from either the Software Package Manager or by typing the following commands into a terminal:
sudo apt update sudo apt install gnucash It seems likely the problems you experienced were not problems with GnuCash per se but likely having multiple instances of the program open simultaneously. When an instance of GnuCash is started, it will lock the datafile for access by any other instance started subsequently which is likely why you received the messages you did. It is also likely that when you start a newly installed version of GnuCash it may either not know where any data file you previously created is or if it does, that file will be locked, in which case you will get a popup giving you a number of options. If you only have that instance of the program running you can safely use the Open Anyway option. If you don't get this dialogue coming up but just the message that the file was not found use the menu File->Open and navigate to the data file location then open it The other possible alternative is to install the flatpack version. How to do this is described in the wiki article https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Flatpak .
