Hi David:

Thx for the reply.

The qif file is not coming from a financial institution. It is being created
from a 3rd party software. I was trying to determine if the file was created
incorrectly or if gnucash wasn’t reading it properly. That’s why I was editing
the file to see if I could “fix” the qif file to work right in gnucash.

Thank u for the link though because it helped me figure out the qif contents. I
made some changes to the pluses and minuses in the file and was able to get the
file to work right in gnucash.

So I have contacted the support person for this 3rd party software to let him
know that it appears to me that the qif file he is creating is not right.

Thx again for your help. It did point me in the right direction to resolve
this. I will wait for a reply from the guy who creates the qif file.

Brenda

Brenda,

It appears that you are editing the QIF file incorrectly. It should not need
to be edited at all if it is coming from a financial institution. I have not
used that format for income accounts so I cannot tell you exactly what is wrong
in your case but I think that one side should be appearing in an income
account, and the other side in a bank account. If you go to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicken_Interchange_Format you will see some
examples of how the format is used, but I think that it is not 100% correct.
Try to find a more authoritative source for exact usage.

Also, I see that you are in a jurisdiction that has HST, which we do not have
in the US. Others in this maillist may be able to better guide you.

Hi David:

I was instructed to import into Assets. But I have tried everything – Bank,
cash, accountsreceivable, accountspayable. The results are all the same.

Here is my import (my last try I used AccountsPayable) as a last ditch attempt.
I think I have tried everything else.

Brenda,

GnuCash also supports QIF imports as they are exported from many financial
institutions. Is there a chance that one of your GnuCash accounts has an
incorrect account type?

Brenda,
Are you using Quicken or QuickBooks? The Quicken file import used by Gnucash
is QFX, not QIF? I don't know anything about the format of the import file,
but I did a quick download of a QFX file and the layout looks very different.
I hesitated to respond, because I don't know much about how it works, I just
know it works fine for me and the only difference was QIF vs QFX. Gnucash will
also import OFX and CSV files if you want to try a different format. I didn't
see any responses to your question, so I decided to offer what little help I
could.

Thank You,

Subject: [GNC] QIF Import Problem

Good afternoon:

I am a first time poster, long time user of gnucash...

I am trying to import a QIF file into gnucash. Gnucash is entering
everything as a debit. I can't verify this but am being told that it works
with Quicken. Is there a problem with the file or is there a problem with
gnucash? I would appreciate any help.

Here is the qif file (an attachment is also included):
