Thanks all, I eventually found this line in the accelerator-map file
; (gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/GncPluginPageRegisterActions/JumpLinkedInvoiceAction" “”) and edited it so that it now reads (gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/GncPluginPageRegisterActions/JumpTransactionAction" "<Primary>j”) If I remember correctly, the accelerator-map file distributed with earlier versions of GNC included suggested key combinations for all the possible actions, so all that was necessary was to remove the leading colon.
