The thing is, most of the time those boxes are empty anyway, and doing it the poedit way will mean making users 1) discover it at some point 2) move their mouse every time they'd like to get the context. As for novel ideas for the interface, I keep thinking about this a lot, and I am having trouble imagining a better layout than the current one that doesn't always have some drawbacks. For example, having the messages editable in place in the message table will pose some problems with regards to the size of the input area and the attention span of the translators.
