Regarding One: by viewer do you mean geoserver layer preview? maybe applying a cql filter if your layers share the same attributes. (check andrea aime response here <https://stackoverflow.com/questions/34474852/how-to-filter-geoserver-layer-group-using-cql-filter> ) or applying "style group" to layer group (never done myself) Regarding Two: it's design and makes sense. If you want to advertise a layer group, the individual layers must be visible too.
