While I think there isn't a reason to not use grub2, you can use 0.97 and don't stay on 2012, that table on distrowatch only has served the porpouse of confusing you, ignore it, packages in gentoo don't work that way, for many packages there's not only one version available you can build(usually stable, testing, and even directly from git), if you want to know what package versions are available go to https://packages.gentoo.org/. you can choose to install grub or grub 2 by selecting the slot 0 for grub. learning about slots is up to you.
