Also, to correct the above - I did do one other thing, but didn't see it until I went to emerge something else...

When I emerged another app after updating udev, after the successful emerge there was a warning about some preserved libs fro the old udev, and it told me to (and so I did):

emerge @preserved-rebuild

to rebuild lvm2...

Thanks again... :) I'm just about done updating everything else that had gotten backed up by my holding off on doing anything about udev...
