I've had people roll their eyes when I tell them I use Gentoo and build systems from source. I just roll my eyes back, tell them I've administered Red Hat, SuSE, Debian, and Free and OpenBSD. Next, I tell them the reason I use Gentoo is because it's so easy to keep updated, especially as compared to RPM-based distros. If they don't believe me, then I do a system update in front of them.
