Perhaps a solution using a use flag might be needed. Maybe "oldapi", default unset of course. I don't know, I'm sure there will be things to work out if this is going to be attempted, and ultimately if it's impossible to do entirely within the package itself (I'm certainly not proposing something that needs changes all over the place or in other packages to work) well then it can't be done and that's that.
