Clear and detailed commit messages are also kinda useful here too. Really easy to do a `git commit -m $MESSAGE` wherein $MESSAGE is far too short to be of use to anybody trying to make sense of what happened later. You can write letters to grandma in your commit messages, so it doesn't really hurt to write enough so a drunk version of yourself who had an accidental lobotomy can later make sense of it.
