I've been in this position more than once, and had to go through the bootcd+binaries (thanks to http://dev.gentoo.org/~avenj/bins/) restore. Argh. I've often thought that atomic updates and rollback within portage would be useful - maybe it could just be done as a layer over subversion for Gentoo updated binary packages. Or maybe rebuilding from source is preferable. Anyway, it would be very useful to be able to revert to a known good state with a single command.
