Also, the Champion makes sure the discussion phase is wrapped up and turned into a vote; ensures the vote is tallied etc. These can of course be done by others, but having one person responsible is generally easier, and less likely to result in omission or duplication. By the way, the Champion does not seem to be listed on the podling status pages or summary.
