I think it's important that Aries have its own identity independent from a particular framework implementation (e.g. Felix or Equinox) or Kernel (e.g. Karaf, Geronimo, etc.). Independence (both technical and perception) will help make it equally consumable in each and increase the likelihood of it being deployed in more environments.
I also believe Aries will attract a community which is sustainable and different from those other projects. Given the goal to have Aries components work on and/or be consumed by those projects I would hope that the Aries community would share members with Felix, Geronimo, ServiceMix, etc.. This outcome would be highly desirable. My hope is that incubation will prove that Aries is indeed a sustainable independent project and if that is found not to be the case, then that is also a valid outcome.
