The problem is one of timezones .. IRC works if most of the people are in the same/similar TZ. If you want people from the other side of the world to become part of the project then please don't use IRC all the time; its a PITA to read logs and have to deal with stuff thru that. A regularly scheduled IRC chat does work but if IRC is a key part of day-to-day execution then IMO that's a problem from the global perspective. Of course YMMV.
