Not sure anyone has done that exercice before ;-) I believe you need to unzip it in a "gdalautotest" directory under the GDAL source tree, to replicate the exact layout of the git repository, and then run cmake so that a $build/gdalautotest directory with the generated pytest.ini file is created.
