That would be a good idea. One other compiler I work with frequently (the Intel Fortran compiler) does just that. However, either it doesn't have or their marketing department doesn't want you to know about knobs to tweak these decisions :-)

Both gfortran and ifort have a much longer list of adjustable limits on in-lining than most customers are willing to study or test.
