This question puzzles me too. Would be nice to have something in Makefile machinery that would grep sources for GTY and put automatic dependencies for invoking gengtype automatically for these files. Of course, the only issue is who is willing to implement this :)
BTW, it is strange that gengtype* files do not mention anyauthor or contributor (with an email to contact them)?
