...which is really weird. I wonder what influenced Google's ranking here 
(all the more given that there should be few, if any, external links to 
that Sphinx docs).

Mark knows me a bit, I guess. :-)  In this specific case I'm fine dropping 
those links without a redirect (which may then permeate the obsolete URLs).

Unless anyone feels strongly about it (and I understand you don't, 
Jonathan), I wouldn't put redirects in place.
