Fair point.

I would certainly prefer that you hold off until Stage 2, as indicated by the documented I posted.
Could you explain what benefits from waiting? None of the other large,

The primary benefit is just reduced risk, as you suggest.

The Stage 1 schedule looks full to me, and I'd like to see those patches go in soon so that we can start shaking out the inevitable problems. I'm much less worried about the long-term impact of Nathanael's patch; if it breaks something, it will get fixed, and then that will be that. But, that brief breakage might make things difficult for people putting in things during Stage 1, or compound the problem of having an unstable mainline.

scheduled changes from 4.1 benefit from pushing this back. The only
thing that it saves is one possible cause of broken bootstraps; you may
as well ask no one to check in large patches, then. I'm sure plenty of
people less careful than Nathanael will break bootstrap in the next few
months.

I do realize that this is a situation where people who try to be good citizens could get penalized at the expense of people who aren't. I would hope that maintainers should exercise discipline in that respect; it's my feeling that those who submitted projects (like Nathanael) should have an edge over others who pop up with big patches without prior notice.

I was going to try to propose a method to go forward here, but I see that the Wiki now says "Part 1 checked in". Does that mean that Nathanael went ahead and checked in the first part of his work without actually allowing me a chance to change my mind? I'd be surprised by that, so I'm wondering if someone else update the Wiki incorrectly. The second part of Nathanael's proposal specifically says that it requires buy-in from the Ada maintainers and will not be ready until April, so I would imagine that's not ready yet.

So, I think the next step is for Nathanael to tell me what the current state actually is. Then, I'll have some discussion with Nathanael to understand how we can move forward. If my concerns can be allayed, I've no problem with changing my mind.
