Hi thom. I agree. on a purely personal level, Shades of doom was my first Audio game simply because the original Doom is a game that I personally find unplayable. for the same very selfish reason, I'd love to see audio resident evil etc.
On general principles though as i said, the more accessible remakes the better whether old or new games, allowing of course for the restraints of both copywrite and resources. If a remake isn't possible due to copywrite though, a homage game is certainly a good thing, (I've got a couple such notions which i'm hoping to create with audio game maker). As far as copywrites go, the situation does often seem extremely strange to me. For example, First star software shut down a project called Dx boulderdash which was an attempt to create a game to play all the original Boulderdash and emerald mine levels, in their original format with original graphics etc. However, there are numerous projects which do the same thing, including Rocks -n- diamonds a remake project that has been going sinse 1995 and is so popular it even has a Wikipedia artical. there are also literally hundreds of both freeware and commercial games with the boulderdash name (as well as hundreds of variations there of), and concept, some of them using the original level layouts, but with source code written from scratch. So, it seems that First star only objected because Dx Boulderdash both used the original name, and could play the original bouldedash levels released in "Bd" file format. I don't think there would be too much difficulty if any audio game devs decided to release Crypt quester, deadly battle or inhabiting badness, provided that they stayed clear of the original source code, audio, character names etc. all the best, Dark. _______________________________________________ Gamers mailing list ..
