Just a thought off the top of my head: Is the text in all upper case?
Maybe that is why it is being spoken that way?

Hi everyone,
I am not sure where to get help with this, but I've been having a
strange issue with NVDA and text based games like Destination Mars,
Atlantic City Blackjack, Run for President, etc where NVDA spells
everything on the screen instead of reads it.So if you get a sentance
like "what would you like to do" NVDA will go "w h a t w o u l d y o u
l i k e t o d o" which is obviously annoying. In fact, it drives me
slightly insane. However, if I shut NVDA up with the control key and
read the screen with the review keys its fine, but when the screen of
text first comes up NVDA just sits there and spells everything. Has
anyone ever seen this problem before, and is there a fix for it?
