I see a bit more to it.

Gaetz had to resign, *immediately*.
He says, so that his seat can be filled in 8 weeks, early January.
I say, because the ethics committee report was due to be released tomorrow
and it will be damning.

Trump sees a three-fer:
1-express his personal contempt for the DOJ
2-at least a frisson of terror in the hearts of his political enemies like
Pelosi
3-removing an obstacle to his using the House and House leadership (Gaetz
would be an obstacle because he is vainer than Trump)

Gaetz will withdraw before the Senate considers his nomination; either because
the House report will be leaked to the Senate (maybe the public) or the FBI
will reconstruct the report's essential findings and provide to the Senate.
