You will need to install libexpat to make v4.0.4 work on rh9.  Or, if
you have a rhel4 or later variant, the better option is to install the
freesurfer centos4 distribution.

The next release of freesurfer for rh9 will not have the libexpat shared
lib dependency.

What are the qdec issues that you have been having?  The only change to
qdec after v4.0.1 is the ability to load and save project files.
