BASIC Linux is old and meant for old computers. The OP said 1996 cpu but doesn't specify what. Probably a 586 or older. IIRC, it uses a 2.2.x kernel. Better would be to grab old ZipSlack (Slackware 11), which at least uses 2.4.x and can also run atop FAT partition. Basically, your best move would probably be to install FreeDOS and something else like Linux (or maybe FreeBSD, more minimal by default), which can access the rest of the hard drive without any problems (since it doesn't use the BIOS). Even if it's just to copy back and forth between your FAT partition / DOS setup, it would probably be easier (unless you want to dig up OnTrack, not recommended, but maybe it works okay for you). P.S. Another interesting thing to play with (though it doesn't circumvent the partition size problems, it has its own) is DOS-Minix 2.0.4, which boots atop DOS and (IMHO) is fun to play with occasionally. And/or OctaOS or similar, if you're just bored to death. ;-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Free Next-Gen Firewall Hardware Offer Buy your Sophos next-gen firewall before the end March 2013 and get the hardware for free!
