Just to follow up on this thread from April, where people were talking about graphics/drm-kmod hanging on boot with an older Radeon card. I had the same issue and have bene using graphics/drm-legacy-kmod since then, but the changes to the Linux KPI which have come into STABLE in the last few days, and the newer version of the DRM pot, seem to have fixed the issue and I am now back to using the modern drivers. Worth a try for those people who were also having the same issue (sorry, I dont have much of the original thread to hand and I can't remember who you were)
