The issue with supplying source is allowing your software technology investment to be used freely on competitor's hardware. The purpose of developing software technology is to have an advantage over your competitors in selling your product. You develop software to make your hardware more attractive for sale. If everyone has the same software (ie most linux and freebsd ethernet cards and wan cards) then there is no incentive to spend dollars on software development.
