I see it as the most optimal way forward as well. CoffeeScript goes to JavaScript. ClojureScript goes to JavaScript. ActionScript could follow a similar path using a custom compiler. Then we'd be subject to the limitations of the JS engine, but we'd be on the targets we need to be that we currently can't, namely tablets and phones.
