Several years ago when we started the Shale project (now defunct) we
had a logo contest. I don't remember the exact procedure we used. We
allowed both PMC and non-PMC votes, but only the PMC votes were
considered binding. This meant that the PMC and community might pick
different logos, and, if so, the PMC should probably really consider
using the one the community picked unless there was really good reason
not to. But the PMC made the final decision (which is kind of obvious,
but it didn't hurt to state it).

Again, I don't remember the process, whether public or private, etc.
but I seem to remember all the choices were numbered and everybody
just picked their favorite one and posted the number to the list. In
the end I think the PMC came to the same conclusion the community did.
