Nope, it's your assertion (to reuse), you defend it. Experience tells us
that name reuse for different functionality does not end well.
As for "it ought to be documented", then get with it; ffmpeg is open
source- you can download the source, make patches, and see if they're
accepted. Do not ask me, or anyone else really, to do it for you. (And
please don't bother with the "I'm not a programmer" or similar stuff, if
you can get that far down into the weeds of video formats, a 'git clone'
+ edit + test + 'git send-email' (see
https://www.ffmpeg.org/developer.html#toc-Submitting-patches-1)
shouldn't be that difficult.
