I don't know why they use the word "monochrome" whatsoever, since they

they can be anything, just like they can for PNG, TIFF and QuickTime. It
would of course be nice to have a Media Player that actually is able to
play raw 1-bit AVI files, but it seems they've overlooked that part for
some reason.
I would guess that the use of the word "monochrome" is just a (bad) way
to indicate that there is only one color (albeit with a background
color). Or should we interpret it otherwise? If they REALLY meant that
it was black & white only, they shouldn't have gone into such depth
about describing the palette for this mode.
