It's a bit more complex here.
1) it is a choice made for ssh, not for FFmpeg and not even for sftp
2) we previously did not respect that choice, thus it is a behaviour change

I have no strong feelings about it, but you did ask if this change might have 
undesireable or unexpected consequences...
