Uh, I use compression on 30 MBit/s connections. For textual log files it about 
doubles the transfer speed.

I don't know if it makes sense, just pointing out one case where it makes a 
potentially user-visible behaviour change.
You could have a "force uncompressed" stream option to make it configurable, 
possibly enabled by default...
