When the British Army were defeated at Isandhlwana,
Wolseley was sent by Disraeli to Natal to succeed
Lord Chelmsford in military activities and to assume
      administrative responsibilities as High Commissioner
for South East Africa, thus bringing him into
conflict with Sir Bartle Frere. Covers the period
when he was charged with the pacification of Zululand
and the Transvaal until his return to England. He was
over-concerned with his own ambitions including
wishing to succeed to the Command in India, even to
the Viceroyalty. He articulates the record of a man
who knew he was right and who tolerantly battled on
in a world of fools and rogues.

Not one of the author's hunting titles, rather a
detailed overview of the area in diverse fields.
Includes a lengthy memoir of author. In 1910,
following King Leopold’s death, the Lado Enclave
became a province of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, with
Stigand appointed Administrator. In 1912 the southern
half of the Lado Enclave was ceded to Uganda, then a
British protectorate. British authorities failed to
effectively administer the area, leaving the enclave
to become a 'bad-man's land'. Ivory hunters moved in
and shot almost all of an estimated herd of 2000
elephants resident in the enclave between 1909 &
1912. Sources consider that the publicity from this
hunt and the resulting public outrage led to the
      beginnings of the conservation movement.

Author's prophetic statement in this classic of
conservation still rings true. "Large cities continue
to proliferate. In the coming decades and centuries,
men will not travel to view marvels of engineering,
but they will leave the dusty towns in order to
behold the last places on earth where God’s
creatures are peacefully living. Countries which have
preserved such places will be envied by other nations
and visited by streams of tourists. There is a
difference between wild animals living a natural life
and famous buildings. Palaces can be rebuilt if they
are destroyed in wartime, but once the wild animals
of the Serengeti are exterminated no power on earth
      can bring them back".

Denis Lyell, a hunter with a long and practical
experience of his subject gained in Nyasaland, North
Eastern Rhodesia and Portuguese East Africa from

information on elephants and their habits, hints on
hunting them, their ivory, and the dangers generally
of hunting elephant and other big game. His advice &
fascinating facts are threaded with anecdote in which
