British officers to survive the Battle of Isandlwana,
being recommended for a VC. Arriving again in South
Africa at the very end of 1899 he had a successful
career during the Boer War being swiftly promoted to
Major-General. Makes considerable use of
Smith-Dorrien's 'Memories Of Forty-Eight Years
Service' supplemented by material from his personal
diaries and letters.

Comments on such diverse issues as Madam Blavatsky,
ownership of the Koh-I-Noor diamond, and tiger
hunting. Much of his life was spent in military
service in India, but we note that he served during
the Zulu War with his company of Royal Engineers (4
chapters) and later (1901) in the Eastern Transvaal
during the Boer War (1 chapter).

Author was in the 1st King's Royal Rifles. Captured
at Talana he was held in the Staats Model School in
Pretoria. Later he served under General Lyttleton
near Olifants River, then with Colonel Campbell's
Column, at Lydenburg, then trekking with Colonel
Benson's Column. Includes list of casualties in the
M.I. 1st KRR and also list of 29 out of 95 men who
served with the Company from start to finish of the
campaign. Scarce in original edition.

Author was born in Natal. This biography recounts
action during the Zulu War, The Boer War, and the
Bambata Rebellion. In 1914 he formed the Natal Light
Horse which saw service in the German South West
Africa campaign but was subsequently disbanded. Later
in Egypt & Palestine with the 3rd Australian Light
Horse Brigade he gained the title nickname at the
battle of Romani during the Palestine campaign due to
his frequent galloping horse excursions to rouse his
troops to greater action at the front.

Originally published in Afrikaans as 'Met De
Boeren-Commando's'. He was present at many major
engagements and gives memorable accounts of Colenso,
of the Boer attempt to break into Ladysmith by
storming the Platrand, of his own adventures while on
commando and of the "great De Wet hunts". His bitter
commentary upon the scorched earth policy (burning
farmhouses, killing livestock, and of course the
concentration camps) provides a moving counterpoint
to the fighting. An educated and sensitive man,
minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, he served as
chaplain to the Harrismith Commando.

Georges, Compte de Villebois-Mareuil was the
youngest Colonel in the French army and had commanded
the French Foreign Legion in Algeria. Fighting for
the Boers, he died in action against the British in

Schlosberg a farmers 14-year old daughter, the other
by Alexander Kay an English doctor and war
correspondent. She tells of the looting and burning
of farms, he of the siege of Ladysmith. Later in
Pretoria paths cross as they meet and she asks him
for news of a friend. Interesting entry from Kay's
journal re Breaker Morant and the Bushveld
Carbineers.

Gideon Scheepers, a 23 year old Boer fighter, was
executed by British firing squad next to an empty
grave only months before the Anglo-Boer War came to
an end. The body was exhumed and reburied in an
unknown grave to prevent his commando from recovering
it. Failing to adhere to the Geneva Convention in
respect of prisoners of war his death caused an
outcry and the way in which it was carried out
ensured a martyr's status for him thereafter.

intended for his parents alone, jotted down in the

eleven years in the Honourable Artillery Company he
received his commission in 1899 and volunteered for
the Mounted Infantry in the C.I.V. Regiment. He saw
action with the 7th MI at Bethlehem, Naauwpoort Nek,
Golden Gate, Cox's Farm, Heilbron. He was mortally
wounded in later action at Holland in the Transvaal
at the very end of 1901. Provides an almost
day-by-day account of his two years in the saddle.

he gives an account of his own escape at Isandhlwana,
including details of the saving of the colours of the
24th Regiment by Melvill & Coghill which vary from
other contemporary reports. There are 12 chapters
relating to the Boer War. This is a full biography of
his military career and so covers time spent in
India, and during the Great War both in France and
East Africa.

William Kennedy Laurie Dickson was a Scottish
inventor who devised an early motion picture camera
under the employment of Thomas Edison. In 1895 he
founded the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company
which was the first motion picture company devoted
entirely to film production and exhibition. During
November 1899 through July 1900 Dickson was in South
Africa filming scenes of the Boer War, often at the
very front of the action, and including the relief of
Ladysmith. Liberally illustrated.

released by his son. They provide interesting

Majuba, he was initially a commandant in Natal, and
then went to serve under Gen. Cronje in the west. He
was involved in the peace negotiations at the end of
the war. The book has extensive appendices: The first
meeting of the National Representatives in
Vereenigning. The conference at Pretoria between the
committee of the National Representatives and Lords
Kitchener & Milner. The second meeting of the
National Representatives at Vereeniging. all in May
1902. He was imprisoned for taking part in the Maritz
rebellion of 1914 and sentenced to 6 years in jail,
being released after one year on undertaking to not
be further involved in politics.

the New York World and was sent to South Africa to
cover the hostilities between the British and the
Boers, reporting from the Boer point of view. He was
the first journalist to report that the fighting
between Britain and the Boers had started in the
Second Boer War. This book was suppressed by the
British authorities in 1901. His account includes
details about the composition and organization of the
Boer forces.

great classics of the Boer War. Author was besieged
in Ladysmith, and died there of a fever Jan 15 1900
just weeks before its relief. (obituary in The

more intricate and interesting character than the
dunderhead of popular legend.

This regiment was formed in 1899 as colonial
irregulars to fight for the Uitlander cause. This
regiment saw service at Elandslaagte, Ladysmith,
Mafeking during the Boer War. Later they saw more
during the 1906 Zulu Rebellion, the revolt and
strikes on the Rand, South West Africa in 1915, and
of course during both World Wars. Various appendices,

Formed in Calcutta in 1899 by Lt Colonel Dugald
Mactavish Lumsden of the Assam Valley Light Horse,
the Corps was raised from volunteers from various
existing Indian regiments. The 250-strong Corps took
part in the march to Bloemfontein, the occupation of
Johannesburg and Pretoria, the pursuit of de Wet, and
the Barberton & De Kaap Campaigns.
