Author contends that many untruths about the

An account of the irregular operations by Louis
Botha's forces in the field during which they
launched attacks on the Itala and Fort Prospect
frontier posts. During this time they diverted
thousands of British troops from planned operations
on the Highveld and restocked their ammunition and
supplies by capturing a 31-wagon convoy and then
retreating away from the closing British cordon. The
results showed that the burghers in the field were
still militarily significant at that time.

#24734 Pemberton, W. Baring. BATTLES OF THE BOER WAR. Blue cloth

The battles of Belmont, Modder River,
Magersfontein, Colenso, and Spion Kop, form the
subject of this book. The author shows that the Boer
commanders were not all either without fault or a
measure of good fortune. His account of the fighting
itself makes much use of unpublished letters, diaries
      and other eye-witness material.

Commencing from their Orange River camp, November
18th 1899, this covers action of Rimington's Guides
(aka Rimington's Tigers, later Damant's Horse) at
Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein, the
Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Poplar Grove,
Bloemfontein, the march to and from Pretoria. Also
chapters on Prinsloo's surrender, and farm burning.
Very critical of the grievances of the Uitlanders as
official reasons for the war, considering them as
trumped-up to provoke the situation. Notably the book
is dedicated to Lieutenant Gustavus Coulson of the
King's Own Scottish Borderers who fell at
Lambrechtfontein on May 19th 1901 bringing off a
wounded man from under enemy fire for which he
      received the Victoria Cross.

tactics which in the long run broke down the Boer
      opposition". Faber blurb.

With authors sense of humour this is one of the
great classics of the Boer War. Author was besieged
in Ladysmith, and died there of a fever Jan 15 1900
just weeks before its relief. (obituary in The
Graphic 2/04/1900). The last chapter by Vernon
Blackwood is an appreciation of the author and
      records many compliments from others.

Seeks to provide the background to Buller's
failures in the Boer War, showing how they were part
of a wider epidemic of inefficiency. When the war
started the army was deficient in arms, clothing, and
other equipment to a degree that would seem
incredible were it not fully documented. Not seeking
to exonerate his blunders, it presents Buller as a
more intricate and interesting character than the
      dunderhead of popular legend.

A detailed overview of the war, well illustrated.
Specialist contributions look at the war from
thematic viewpoints rather than chronologically, thus
providing deeper insights into the war and its
aftermath than may be derived from a simple
'history'. A recommended read to update old
