The 1820 Irish parties of Parker, Butler, Ingram, &
Synnot were diverted from the Eastern Cape by acting
governor Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin on account of the
number of settlers arriving vastly exceeding those
expected and provided for. Arrangements were made to
settle the Irish parties in Clanwilliam in the
Western Cape. This led to a crisis of confidence in
the settler leadership, contributing to the collapse
of the Clanwilliam settlement and the dispersion of
the settlers. Some regrouped and moved to the
intended destination of Albany. Preliminary chapters

alone, (the 7th Frontier War of 1846-1847). Stationed
in the centre of the action near to Fort Peddie his

recounts the War of Umlangeni (the 8th Frontier War
of 1850-1852) centred around King Williams's Town
where he was then located. An educated man, his
journal is the best civilian account with much detail
and a good style. The balance of the book deals with
various aspects of his missionary work, recording his
translation of the Bible into a uniform Xhosa edition
which was his major work, "just what suits my cast of

#24388 Crehan, Kate. THE FRACTURED COMMUNITY. Landscapes Of Power
And Gender In Rural Zambia. 238pp paperback 8vo. Owners signature
ffep. G+ condition. University of California Press (1997).

                                                             £15.00
Traces the way in which local village realities are
linked to wider economic, political, and imaginative
structures of power. Examining two small rural
communities in terms of gender, politics, economics,
kinship, state and local relations, & witchcraft, she
uncovers the power relations defining these small
communities. She contributes her argument for the use
of Antonio Gramsci's notion of hegemony to analyse
ordinary life. This study of a marginalised rural
society throws light on the concrete realities of
      capitalism in sub-Saharan Africa.

AFRICA. 214pp sofcover 8vo. Owners inscription ffep. VG+ condition.

The first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in
South Africa as indentured labourers, followed by a
second wave known as Passenger Indians - individuals
who had paid their own fare. Being the last wave of
immigrants to enter a British colony, the Indians saw
themselves, and were perceived by others, as a
homogeneous group originating from India. The
apartheid state as well as anti-apartheid
organisations saw advantages in this. Author analyses
this construct and shows how Indian identity is being
transformed to meet the challenges of the new
      democratic South Africa.

driving the peasant rebellions that ended colonial
rule? Since independence, what has been the fate of
the African peasantry? What has been the content of
      agricultural policies adopted by post-colonial
governments in Africa, and how can these policies be
      accounted for?
