        Discusses Western biomedical discourse about
illness in Africa. Draws on diverse sources such as
court records and medical journals, fund-raising
posters and 'jungle-doctor' cartoons. Most sources
are from British dependencies in East & Central
Africa between 1890 and 1950. Traces the shifts and
variation in medical discourse on African illness.
For instance: Missionary medicine emphasizing 'sin &
      disease'; leprosy and the social role of 'the leper';
and the struggle to define insanity in the context of
ignorance about what the 'normal' African was like
amidst a determination to crush indigenous beliefs.
Africans were deemed made sick not by material
changes to their lives, but rather by their cultural
'maladaptation' to modern life leading to
      'scientific' discourse about their biological
      inferiority.

Author overturns one of the central concepts of
anthropological theory - the idea of remote
      hunter-gatherer societies untouched by contemporary
political and economic forces. Using the San people
of Southern Africa (the so-called Bushmen) generally
cited as the prime example of a pristine prehistoric
society, he gives evidence from many disciplines to
show that the San always had ties to other peoples
and that their current status as subsistence foragers
is a recent development which began in pre-colonial
      times and has continued thereafter.

Describes the distinction drawn by the people
themselves between townsmen and migrants and the way
of life in which some migrants are absorbed and
others are not. The Individual histories of members
of 6 groups of 'home-boys' (migrants from the same
village) are discussed to illustrate the process.

projects worldwide produce the expansion of

Lesotho, once 'the granary of the Free State and
part of the Cape Colony', eventually became an
impoverished labour reserve. Mass labour migration
destroyed family life in Lesotho as well as in
Botswana, Swaziland, and the bantustans within South
Africa. Why did the migrant labour system not end
with political independence in these countries?
Author examines this fundamental question in his
      historical study of Lesotho.
