AFRICANA CATALOGUE Q235 - NEW ACQUISITIONS 14th September 2015

Hello, it is some time since we sent out the last catalogue but we hope
the following selection makes up for the wait. There is, as always, a
selection of Eastern Cape material, albeit small this time. There is a
largish selection of anthropological material related to Africa. Also
an interesting collectable item related to Harry Oppenheimer, as well as
an extremely attractive original copy of von Bulow's 'Drei Jahre Im
Lande Hendrik Witboois' from 1897.

Intercontinental surface mail post is slow worldwide, not just from
South Africa. We send airmail in preference where possible. There are
some notes on this at the end of this catalogue.

Regards
Ian Balchin

Notes on mailing items locally & overseas.

From where we are in Grahamstown the local post up and down the coast
seems to run effectively. Maybe as far inland as Bloemfontein as well.
Where mail has to be routed through the mail hub in Johannesburg there
will be delays. We recommend the use of courier, and we will quote as
necessary. While more expensive, the services available to us work well
and given the moderate extra cost we strongly recommend their use for
prompt delivery as well as peace of mind.

Surface mail to distant continents is no longer a viable option except
for the heaviest items, and we now try to send all items by airmail.
Postal services worldwide are now likely to wait for the shipping
container to fill rather than send a regular shipment where the
container may be far from full. Here, on average, that adds two weeks
before the mail sails. Container shipping goes at 10 knots rather than
the 20 knots that the ships were designed for, with stops at all ports
between. Delays at container farms add to the wait as does the
stringent customs and security checks on every single parcel these days.
Shipping by surface to the UK generally takes 4 months, if you get a
parcel in three months it is the exception rather than the rule.

Airmail delivery times are in excess of two weeks. If you want a faster
delivery consider asking your local courier service to collect from us.
Rates for collection by your courier are way less than if we arrange
the courier delivery from this end (just the same as posting a parcel
to South Africa costs much less than sending one from it).

Post Office Track and Trace systems are misnamed. Once the item has
entered the queue at the shipping port there is no tracking and tracing
until the item has entered the postal service at the far end - by which
time the parcel is probably right at your door. Please do not expect us
to track parcels until we are certain that there is an issue. Postal
services worldwide do not consider parcels that are a few days late as
lost. Even 'airmail' parcels are not considered lost until a period
equal to an extended surface mail delivery has passed. If the parcel
left South Africa and we can give you a date for this, but it has not
shown up on the destination postal service's track and trace system,
please be patient as in general virtually all parcels get do get to
their destinations and it is not usually the fault of SAPO.

Post to Britain, good. Post to most of Europe, good. Post to Australia
(no track and trace system) and Asian countries, patchy, airmail
preferred. Post to the USA, surface mail not recommended. Post to other
locations in Africa, airmail only.
