Is this a Dell by any chance? Turn of acpi support with "noacpi" as an append parameter. Also, if you are running the default 8.2 kernel (2.4.18-6mdk), try using the updated kernel that came out a few months back. If you ARE using the updated kernel, try using the original one. See if you can isolate it to a cause more specific than "8.2 does it." If you're comfortable with manipulating the kernel (and you should be if you're on this list), then try a cooker kernel. Chances are that you will see something different. The only problem is that it will require you to also upgrade a few system related packages and initscripts. If you are uncomfortable playing around at this level with your OS, please do not try it. You can screw up your system such that it would take a bit of work to get it even bootable again. Only do this if you are comfortable and capable of repairing it should it not boot. Blue skies...
