Hi wobo. I had this same thing happen to me under v8.2 when I tried to 
compile Mplayer. I went to the software (RPM) manager and installed 
everything that had anything to do with gcc 2.96 and it worked after that.

PS What I can't tell you is why all necessary components to compile aren't 
installed from the beginning... (Does anyone else know?)
