I use ncftp which lets you do that. It is a much better ftp client IMHO. 
It will allow you to download or upload files directly also,

ncftpget ftp.mandrake.org/dir/dir/thestuff/foo.tgz - gets foo.tgz

ncftpput ftp.mandrake.org/dir/dir/thestuff/foo.tgz - puts foo.tgz

It also has a background function which is great for downloading 
complete directories.
