regular ftp is dumb for backwards compatibility.

Use "ncftp" :

[root@homefw /root]: ftp ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux
ftp: ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux: Unknown host
ftp> quit

[root@homefw /root]: ncftp ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux
