Which version are you guys trying to use?  There are so many to choose from 
that...   anyway, I've been using: 
setiathome-3.03.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar
for a ~year on several versions of mandrake and redhat.

How are you trying to start it?   ./setiathome   is the basic command.  Then 
it will let you log in with an established user name or set up a new one.

Also check permissions of the directory & files you are trying to use.  Did 
you untar it as root and trying to use it as user?

Try installing ksetiwatch from your cds.  It is a graphical front end for it 
and quite nice.
