Eek... seems like somethings messing up your kernel big time. It's probably not 
ne2k-pci itself but it could be a conflict/race condition with some other module or 
rolled-in component of the kernel.
What's your kernel version? Which modules were loaded at the time? 

BTW, is the "alias net ne2k-pci" line still in your modules.conf? If so, remove it and 
see what happens.
